Red Mills Horse Care Mash – 18kg

Horse Care Mash is the cereal-grain-free mash in the RED MILLS range, soaking in 15 minutes and built on alfalfa meal, beet pulp and soya hulls with full-fat linseed for oil. Apple and carrot flakes are in there too, which is a large part of why a horse that has stopped eating will often take it.

Declared starch is 7.0% and sugar 8.4% — genuinely modest for a feed carrying 12.0 MJ/kg — and crude fibre reaches 16.0%. It can be the sole hard feed or go alongside another ration, and the soaked format makes it the obvious choice for a horse whose teeth are no longer up to hard cubes.

Feeding

• Light work: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg horse.
• Moderate work: 0.4–0.8kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.0kg for a 500kg horse.
• Hard work: 0.8–1.2kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 4.0–6.0kg for a 500kg horse.
• Intense work: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 6.0–8.0kg for a 500kg horse.
• All rates are dry weight before soaking. RED MILLS cap any single meal at 400g per 100kg bodyweight — 2kg for a 500kg horse.
• Soak for 15 minutes before feeding. Can be fed as the sole hard feed or mixed with another ration.

• Composition: alfalfa meal, beet pulp, soya hulls, cane molasses, wheat bran, soya bean flakes (steam cooked), extruded soya bean, full fat linseed, pea flakes, chopped alfalfa, apple flakes, carrot flakes, mono-dicalcium phosphate, soya oil, maerl 0.75%, calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, magnesium oxide, mannan-/fructo-oligosaccharides 0.1%.
• Typical analysis: crude protein 14.0%, crude fibre 16.0%, crude oils and fats 8.0%, crude ash 10.4%. Starch 7.0%. Sugar 8.4%. Digestible energy 12.0 MJ/kg.
• Minerals: calcium 1.63%, phosphorus 0.81%, sodium 0.3%, chloride 0.64%, potassium 1.39%, magnesium 0.33%.
• Per kg: vitamin A 15,000 iu, vitamin D3 2,500 iu, vitamin E 375 iu, vitamin C 50mg, vitamin K3 4.4mg, biotin 3.75mg. Iron 150mg, iodine 1.5mg, copper 48.75mg, manganese 81.25mg, zinc 150mg, selenium 0.5mg, a proportion of each chelated.
• Earlier copy on this page credited the mash with added probiotics and elevated biotin. RED MILLS' declared composition contains prebiotic mannan-/fructo-oligosaccharides, not probiotics, and biotin is 3.75mg per kg, which is ordinary for a fortified feed rather than elevated.

Care & Caution

• Starch at 7.0% plus sugar at 8.4% comes to roughly 15% combined. That is far below a cereal mix but still above the level usually advised for an actively laminitic horse — take veterinary advice before feeding it to one.
• Soak for the full 15 minutes. Feeding a quick-soak mash dry to a horse with poor teeth risks choke.
• Soaked feed spoils quickly in warm weather. Make it up fresh for each meal and do not leave it standing.
