Red Mills Cool 'N' Cooked Mix 10% – 20kg Horse & Pony Feed
Red Mills Cool 'N' Cooked Mix – 20kg
Cool 'N' Cooked Mix is RED MILLS' traditional oat-free muesli for horses and ponies in light to moderate work, and for horses in pre-training. Steam-cooked barley, maize and wheat flakes make up the base, and the “cool” in the name refers to the absence of oats rather than to any declared starch level.
It is the lightest-worked feed of the RED MILLS mixes on paper: 10.0% protein and just 3.0% oil, at 12.4 MJ/kg. That suits a horse hacking out and doing a bit of schooling, and it suits an owner who has found their horse fizzy on an oat-based bucket.
Performance & Benefits
- Oat-free muesli for horses and ponies that get sharp on oat-based feeds.
- 10.0% crude protein and 12.4 MJ/kg digestible energy — enough for light to moderate work.
- Steam-cooked barley, maize and wheat flakes, cooked to improve starch digestion in the small intestine.
- Low 3.0% crude oils and fats, the lowest oil level of the RED MILLS mixes we stock.
- Fortified per kg with 15,000 iu vitamin A, 2,000 iu vitamin D3, 300 iu vitamin E and 60mg copper.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies in light to moderate work.
- Horses in pre-training, before the workload steps up.
- Horses that become excitable on oat-based mixes.
- Owners wanting a straightforward, traditional muesli rather than a fibre-led feed.
- Not a low-starch feed and not right for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or EMS pony despite the name — RED MILLS publish no starch figure and the base is cooked cereal. Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes at a declared 4.0% starch, or Red Mills PerformaCare Balancer at 3.0% starch fed with forage alone, are the choices for those ponies.
Feeding
- Light work: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Moderate work: 0.4–0.8kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Hard work: 0.8–1.2kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 4.0–6.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Intense work: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 6.0–8.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Feed alongside good forage, split into two or more meals a day.
- Clean, fresh water at all times.

- Earlier copy on this page gave crude fibre as 12%, ash as 8%, copper as 30mg, vitamin A as 12,000 iu and vitamin E as 100 iu. RED MILLS' own declared figures are 8.0% fibre, 6.5% ash, 60mg copper, 15,000 iu vitamin A and 300 iu vitamin E, and those are the ones used above.
Care & Caution
- “Cool” here means oat-free, not low-starch. RED MILLS declare no starch figure, and this is not a feed for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or EMS horse or pony.
- Native ponies in light work often need less hard feed than the lightest rate shown. Feed to condition and body score, not to the scoop.
- Introduce gradually over 7–14 days.
