Pure Meadow Mash – 15kg

Pure Meadow Mash is a high-fibre micro-pellet that soaks into a soft mash in about five minutes at one part feed to two parts water. It is built as a partial or full hay replacer for horses that can no longer manage long fibre — worn or missing teeth, quidding, or a dust sensitivity that makes hay a problem — and it holds a lot of water, which helps daily intake in a horse that drinks poorly.

Sugar is genuinely low at 2.5%. Starch, at 8.5%, is the highest of any fibre feed in the Pure range, and because this is fed at up to 1kg per 100kg of bodyweight the daily starch load is far larger than the percentage alone suggests — a 500kg horse on the full rate takes in around 425g of starch a day. Read the Care & Caution section before feeding it to a laminitic or EMS horse.

Suitable For

• Older horses with worn, missing or painful teeth.
• Horses that quid long fibre or have stopped managing hay altogether.
• Dust-sensitive horses needing a low-dust forage source.
• Horses on box rest, travelling, or with limited grazing.
• Laminitic and EMS horses only with care — at 8.5% starch and a high feeding rate this is not the low-starch option in the range. Pure Fibre Balance and Pure Easy deliver far less starch per day.

Feeding

• Feed up to 1kg per 100kg bodyweight per day — up to 5kg dry weight for a 500kg horse.
• Soak at one part feed to two parts water in a shallow bucket, stir, and leave around five minutes.
• Where it is replacing hay, split the daily amount across at least three servings.
• Introduce gradually over about 14 days to reach the full rate.
• Fresh drinking water must still be available at all times.

Composition & Analysis

• Composition: oatfeed, unmolassed sugar beet, soya hulls, wheatfeed, micronised linseed, limestone, di-calcium phosphate, yeast product (Diamond V 'XP'), mixed herbs, Vistacell yeast, salt and peppermint oil.
• Digestible energy 8.7 MJ/kg. Protein 8%. Oil 4%. Fibre 23%. Starch 8.5%. Naturally occurring sugar 2.5%.
• Calcium 0.8%. Phosphorus 0.27%. Salt 0.3%.
• Pure list the herbs only as mixed herbs plus peppermint oil, and publish neither a count nor a named list. An earlier version of this page claimed a blend of seven herbs, which Pure do not state.
• The composition contains soya hulls, so unlike most of the Pure range this is not a soya-free feed.

Care & Caution

• Pure describe this feed as suiting horses on controlled low-starch diets, but at 8.5% starch it is the highest-starch fibre feed they make and it is fed at several times the rate of a balancer. For a laminitic, EMS or PPID horse, check the daily starch total against your vet's advice rather than relying on the percentage.
• Pure's published composition for this feed lists no added vitamins and minerals, unlike the rest of the range. Used as a full hay replacer it needs a balancer alongside it — Pure Balance is the matching product.
• Never feed it dry. It is designed to be soaked, and a micro-pellet fed dry to a horse with poor dentition is a choke risk.
