Mollichaff Original is the plainest chaff in the range and the one most people mean when they say "a bag of Molli". Three ingredients: straw, a light dressing of cane molasses and limestone flour. It exists to put chop and chew time into a bucket feed, slow a horse down over a hard feed, and add a little calcium along the way.

The molasses dressing is what makes it palatable, and it is also what puts sugar in it — Mollichaff declare 16–21%, which is the second highest in the Mollichaff chaff range. At 7.5 MJ/kg and 0.5% starch it is a low-energy filler rather than a feed in its own right, but the sugar figure rules it out for some horses entirely.

Suitable For

• Mixing through a hard feed to slow eating and reduce bolting.
• Carrying powdered supplements that would otherwise be left in the manger.
• Horses in light work with no sugar restriction.
• Not suitable for laminitic, insulin-resistant, EMS or Cushing's horses at 16–21% sugar — Mollichaff Light Molasses Free (1.8% sugar) or Mollichaff HoofKind Complete are the ones to feed instead.

Feeding

• Feed alongside good-quality forage as part of the daily ration, dry or lightly damped.
• Mollichaff publish no feeding rate for Original, so none is stated here — it is a chaff to mix through a feed rather than a measured ration.
• As a rough guide, mix it into the hard feed at whatever volume slows the horse down; a typical double handful to a scoop per feed is common practice.
• Introduce gradually over 7–10 days, as with any change of feed.
• Keep clean fresh water available at all times.

Care & Caution

• At 16–21% sugar this is a molassed chaff and is not suitable for horses or ponies with laminitis, EMS, PPID or insulin dysregulation, nor for those on a veterinary low-sugar diet.
• Good doers gain weight readily on molassed chaff fed by the scoop. Weigh what you feed rather than eyeing it.
