A donkey is not a small horse, and feeding one like a small horse is how donkeys get fat. Mollichaff Donkey is built around straw rather than grass alone, which is the closest a bagged feed gets to the sparse, high-fibre browse a donkey evolved on: 27% fibre, 2.5% starch and only 7.3 MJ/kg of energy.

It is a complete feed, so fed at the recommended rate alongside decent forage it needs nothing else added — the broad spectrum vitamin and mineral premix, calcium included, is already in the bag. Camomile, mint and lemon balm are in the mix for palatability, which matters with an animal famously good at refusing what is good for it.

Feeding

• Miniature donkeys 100–150kg: 0.25kg a day, or up to 2kg a day as a partial forage replacer.
• Standard UK donkeys 150–200kg: 0.5kg a day, or up to 3kg a day as a partial forage replacer.
• Large breed donkeys 200–300kg: 1kg a day, or up to 4kg a day as a partial forage replacer.
• Large mules over 300kg: 1–2kg a day, or 4–6kg a day as a partial forage replacer.
• Feed alongside good quality forage, and split larger amounts across more than one feed.
• Fresh water at all times, and adjust the amount by condition rather than by the chart alone.
