SPILLERS Performance Mix 20kg – Competition Feed for Horses in Hard Work
Mollichaff Calmer Complete – 15kg
Calmer Complete is Mollichaff's answer to the nervous or over-reactive horse: a fibre-based complete feed carrying elevated magnesium alongside vitamins B1, B12 and E, with chamomile, lemon balm and mint blended through it. The nutritional argument is that a horse short of magnesium and B vitamins is a horse with a nervous system under strain, and that the answer is diet rather than a paste before you get on.
It is built to be fed as the sole concentrate: straw, grass and fibre pellets with a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement, running at 9.8 MJ/kg with starch at 2.8% and sugar at 7–8%. Keeping starch that low is half the point — a large cereal feed is one of the commonest reasons a horse is sharp in the first place.
Performance & Benefits
- Elevated magnesium plus vitamins B1, B12 and E, supporting normal nervous system function.
- Chamomile, lemon balm and mint blended through the feed rather than fed as a separate supplement.
- Low starch at 2.8%, avoiding the cereal load that makes many horses sharp.
- Sugar declared at 7–8%, low by the standards of the molassed chaffs.
- 25% crude fibre with 9.8 MJ/kg, so the energy arrives slowly from fibre and oil.
- Broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement, so it works as the only concentrate alongside forage.
Suitable For
- Excitable, nervous or over-reactive horses and ponies.
- Horses that lose the plot away from home, at shows or on the lorry.
- Owners wanting to strip cereal starch out of the diet without dropping the bucket feed.
- Feeding as the sole concentrate alongside good-quality forage.
- Not a conditioning feed — a nervous horse that is also poor is better served by Mollichaff Condition Complete, with the calming support fed separately.
Feeding
- Feed daily by bodyweight alongside good-quality forage: 1kg for a 200kg pony, 1.5kg at 300kg, 2kg at 400kg, 2.25kg at 450kg, 2.5kg at 500kg and 3kg at 600kg.
- That is about 0.5kg per 100kg of bodyweight — 2.5kg a day for a typical 500kg horse.
- One level Stubbs scoop (2.6 litres) of Calmer Complete weighs approximately 0.45kg, so a 500kg horse takes around five and a half level scoops daily.
- Split the daily amount across two or more feeds, dry or damped to preference.
- Fed at these rates with good-quality forage it needs no further supplementation. Introduce gradually over 7–10 days.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: straw, grass, fibre pellets, molasses, soya oil, broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement, chamomile, lemon balm, mint, limestone.
- Typical analysis: energy 9.8 MJ/kg. Protein 7.5–8.5%. Fibre 25%. Oil 5.7%. Starch 2.8%. Sugar 7–8%.
- Bag size 15kg.
- Mollichaff publish no ash, calcium or sodium figure, and no inclusion rates for the magnesium, B vitamins or the herbs, so none is stated here.
- Calmer Complete does contain a molasses inclusion, but at 7–8% declared sugar and 2.8% starch Mollichaff describe it as low in sugar and starch. Where laminitis is the primary concern, Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is the product formulated for it.
Care & Caution
- Check current FEI and BHA rules before feeding any calming product to a horse competing under them, and observe any applicable withdrawal period.
- A sudden change in temperament is a veterinary question before it is a feed question. Pain, ulcers, saddle fit and teeth account for a great many "sharp" horses.
