Half a coconut shell filled with suet, cereals, seeds and mealworms. The shell is the feeder: unwrap it, hang it from the cord and there is nothing else to buy, clip on or clean. When the filling has gone, the shell goes in the bin.

The mealworm filling is the one to reach for in spring, when adults are hunting insect protein for nestlings and a suet-only block is not quite what they are after. Birds cling to the rim and work downwards, which keeps the food out of the rain far better than a flat cake manages.

Feeding

• Unwrap completely and hang by the cord from a branch or feeding station.
• Hang it where it gets some shade. Direct sun softens suet quickly.
• Discard the shell once the filling has gone.
• Do not top the shell up yourself with kitchen fat — cooking fats are not suitable for birds.
• Keep fresh water available nearby.
