Two different grits in one tub, doing two entirely different jobs. The insoluble flint grit is not digested at all: it lodges in the gizzard, the muscular grinding organ behind the crop, and acts as the bird's teeth — without it a hen cannot properly break down whole grain, corn or fibrous forage. The soluble oyster shell dissolves and supplies calcium for eggshell formation.

Birds with free range on stony ground pick up some flint for themselves, but anything on a solid floor, in a run or on soft ground gets none. This tub covers both requirements for a small flock at once, which is why mixed grit is the usual choice for a back garden coop.
