Derma Dog is the one bottle in the Animology range with no fragrance in it at all. Perfume is the commonest single trigger for a dog that comes out of the bath redder and itchier than it went in, so taking it out is the most useful thing a sensitive-skin shampoo can do. Animology describe it simply as a mild shampoo specially formulated for sensitive skin, to clean, deodorise and condition.

The cleansing base is sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate rather than a sulphate, which is a gentler surfactant on a compromised skin barrier. Conditioner is built into the same bottle, panthenol — pro-vitamin B5 — sits in the formula, and aloe barbadensis leaf juice appears low in the ingredient list. Animology state it is pH balanced for dogs and 100% vegan.

How to Use

• Wet the coat thoroughly with warm water.
• Apply the shampoo and work it into a lather from the neck down, avoiding the eyes and ears.
• Animology recommend leaving the lather on for five minutes before rinsing, which is longer than most people bother with and is where the benefit is.
• Rinse completely, repeat if needed, and towel dry.

Care & Caution

• Keep it out of the eyes and out of the ear canal — this is a surfactant wash, and Animology's own directions say to lather from the neck down.
• Rinse until the water runs clear. Shampoo left in the coat is itself a common cause of post-bath itching.
• A dog with sensitive skin that is broken, weeping, smelly or losing hair needs a vet, not a milder shampoo. Derma Dog is a cosmetic wash and treats nothing.
• Formulated for dogs. Do not use it on cats.
