Chicksoft is chopped wheat straw, cleaned and low in dust, treated with a blend of oils including Eucalyptus citriodora — which is what gives the bale its smell and, Bedsoft say, its antimicrobial and insect-repellent properties. It is soft and friable rather than sharp and stalky, so it lies kindly under a bird's feet, and it is absorbent enough that the muck heap ends up smaller.

How to Use

• Spread across the coop floor and into nest boxes, laying it deeper beneath the perches.

• Compost soiled bedding on the heap.
• Keep the pallet off the ground and under cover until use; straw that has taken up damp before it reaches the coop will not perform.
