SPILLERS Gro 'n' Win Stud Balancer – 20kg

Gro 'n' Win is the stud balancer in the Spillers range, and at 32% protein it is the highest-protein product they make. Growing bone and muscle is protein-hungry work, and a mare in early lactation is producing several litres of milk a day; both need amino acids that grass alone rarely supplies in the right balance.

The point of a balancer rather than a stud mix is what it leaves out. A traditional stud feed brings calories that a native mare or a well-grown yearling frequently does not need, and over-feeding energy to youngstock has consequences for developing joints. This delivers the protein, minerals and vitamins at 7% starch and 6% sugar, in servings measured in hundreds of grams.

Feeding

• Broodmare in late gestation: 1kg daily. Mare in early lactation: 1.5kg daily.
• Foal at 3 months: 500g daily. Foal at 6 months: 1kg daily.
• Feed alongside forage and additional fibre; Spillers' worked diets assume both.
• A Spillers balancer cup holds approximately 250g.
• Introduce gradually and reweigh youngstock regularly to keep the rate right for the stage.

Care & Caution

• Do not feed alongside a second fortified feed or broad-spectrum supplement without checking the combined mineral intake. Over-supplying copper, zinc and selenium to a growing horse is a real risk, and youngstock are the group least able to tolerate it.
• Feeding rates for a stud balancer differ from an ordinary one and change with the mare's stage and the foal's age. Reweigh and adjust rather than settling on one scoop and leaving it.
