Henry Bell Fat Balls 160 Pack Wild Bird Food High Energy Suet Balls for Garden Birds
Henry Bell Fat Balls – Box of 160
Fat balls are the broadest-appeal food in the garden: cereals bound in fat, with seeds and minerals through them, taken by everything from long-tailed tits to starlings. Henry Bell list twelve species for them, and in a hard winter a feeder of fat balls will empty faster than anything else on the station.
This is the bulk box, and its one job is cost per ball. Henry Bell size their fat balls at 80g in their own feeder capacity figures, which puts a box of 160 at roughly 12.8kg of feed — enough to run two or three feeders through a whole winter without reordering.
Performance & Benefits
- Cereals, oils and fats, seeds and minerals — high-energy feeding in a form birds can work at.
- Henry Bell supply their fat balls free from nets, which removes the entanglement risk that netted balls carry.
- Henry Bell list twelve species for their fat balls, from long-tailed tits and goldfinches to nuthatches and starlings.
- Bulk quantity, so the price per ball is the lowest of the three Henry Bell pack sizes.
- Feeds all year, not only in winter — adults are hardest pressed while feeding young.
- Fits any standard fat ball feeder, and can be put on a bird table or a ground tray instead.
Suitable For
- Robins, long-tailed tits, great tits, blue tits, coal tits, bullfinches, chaffinches, goldfinches, greenfinches, nuthatches, tree sparrows and starlings.
- Households running more than one feeder, or a feeding station with several fat ball feeders.
- Winter feeding at volume, and year-round topping up.
- Anyone tired of reordering a small pack every fortnight.
- Too much feed for a single feeder in a small garden — the Henry Bell Fat Balls pack of 25 is the sensible size there.
Feeding
- Put the balls in a fat ball feeder, on a bird table or in a ground feeding tray.
- Henry Bell's Heritage Fat Ball Feeder holds five balls; the Essential fat ball feeder holds three.
- Take out only what will be eaten within a few days, and keep the rest of the box closed.
- Always have fresh water available for drinking and bathing.
- Feed all year round; Henry Bell describe them as providing energy for garden birds year-round.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: cereals, oils and fats, seeds, minerals.
- Analytical constituents, as published by Henry Bell: crude protein 8.5%, crude fibres 2.5%, crude fat 19.0%, crude ash 8.5%.
- Henry Bell give 80g as the weight of one fat ball in their feeder capacity specifications.
- Henry Bell list pack sizes of 6, 25 and 50 on their own website and do not list a 160 box there. The composition and constituents above are their published figures for Henry Bell Fat Balls; no separate specification exists for this box size.
- Henry Bell publish no added vitamin content for their fat balls, so none is claimed here.
Care & Caution
- Contains nuts and is packed in an environment where nuts are present. Not for human consumption.
- If you buy netted fat balls from any source, cut the net off before putting them out. Birds' feet and beaks get caught in the mesh. Henry Bell's own balls come without nets.
- Do not feed a ball that has gone mouldy or smells rancid, and do not top up over old feed.
- Fat softens badly in hot weather and can smear a bird's plumage — in a heatwave, offer smaller quantities in the shade.
