Burlybale Ryegrass Haylage – 20kg approx. (High-Energy Forage for Horses & Ponies)
Burlybale Ryegrass Haylage
Burlybale Ryegrass is the higher-energy forage in Burlybed's haylage range, made from a mix of specially chosen ryegrasses grown and baled at Burlerrow Farm at St Mabyn near Bodmin in Cornwall. Bales arrive compact and already cut into sections, with no string to fight with at the stable door.
Burlybed make four Burlybale grades — High Fibre from mature ryegrass, Pasture from native grass varieties, Ryegrass, and Economy from a blend. Ryegrass sits at the higher-energy end, which puts it with horses in moderate to hard work or animals that need to gain condition, rather than with the good doer.
Performance & Benefits
- Made from a quality mix of specially chosen ryegrasses, at the higher-energy end of the Burlybale range.
- Cut into sections before wrapping, with no string, so a bale opens and portions cleanly.
- Burlybed state it is suitable for horses with dust allergies or respiratory problems.
- Naturally fermented and sealed, which is what keeps it fresh in the wrap.
- Grown and produced on Burlybed's own farm in Cornwall, so the whole chain sits with one company.
- Packed in low density polyethylene, the same material as a supermarket bag for life, made from one third recycled content and 100% recyclable.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies in moderate to hard work.
- Horses that need to gain or hold condition, and breeding stock.
- Horses with dust allergies or respiratory sensitivity that struggle on dry hay.
- Owners who want a consistent, traceable forage rather than variable field hay.
- Too much energy for a good doer, a laminitic or a native pony on restricted forage — Burlybale High Fibre, made from mature ryegrass, is the lower-energy grade in the same range.
Feeding
- Introduce gradually alongside the forage the horse is already on, over several days.
- Horses eat roughly 1.5% to 2.5% of bodyweight in forage a day; the right figure depends on size, workload, living environment, temperament and condition.
- Once opened, use within about 3 days in summer or up to 8 days in winter.
- Store bales inside if you can, or outside out of direct sunlight, and do not puncture the wrap.
- Fresh clean water alongside, always.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: 100% ryegrass, naturally fermented (ensiled) forage. Nothing added.
- Burlybed publish no protein, energy, sugar or dry matter analysis for Burlybale, so no figures are stated here.
- Burlybed publish no bale weight for Burlybale either. Our listing shows an approximate 20kg bale.
- Our SKU 1013496, barcode 10134969493.
- If your horse is on a controlled diet and you need a forage analysis, ask Burlybed for a batch figure rather than relying on a published average.
Care & Caution
- Check every bale before feeding. Mould, an off smell or heating means the bale goes on the muck heap, not in the net.
- Small white spots inside the wrap are a harmless yeast from natural fermentation and are not mould.
- Do not feed from a bale that has been punctured or has been open longer than the 3 to 8 day window.
- Sudden changes from hay to haylage upset some horses. Change over gradually.
