Baileys No.15 Senior Mix – 20kg

No.15 is Baileys' conditioning mix for the older horse: 11.5 MJ/kg and 12.5% protein, built from micronised barley, wheat and maize with alfalfa meal and distillers' grains behind them. The point of it is readily digestible calories for a horse whose gut is no longer pulling as much out of its forage as it used to.

Garlic goes in at 0.3% for palatability and Digest Plus scFOS prebiotic at 2.5g/kg. Starch, though, is 27%, and Baileys are explicit that this is not a feed for a horse with a starch-sensitive condition such as PPID or laminitis — which a good number of veterans have. Supplied in 20kg.

Feeding

• Feed by weight alongside forage. One level Stubbs round bowl scoop holds about 1.4kg of mix.
• Baileys cap a meal at 0.5kg of mix per 100kg bodyweight — 2.5kg for a 500kg horse.
• Keep total meal size within 1.5–2kg for a horse or 1.25–1.5kg for a pony, chaff and beet pulp included.
• Dampen the mix for a horse with worn teeth.
• Baileys publish their per-workload rates on the bag rather than online; their nutrition team will set a rate.

Care & Caution

• Baileys do not recommend No.15 for horses with starch-sensitive conditions such as PPID or laminitis. Starch is 27%.
• A large proportion of veterans are PPID cases, diagnosed or not. Have an older horse tested before putting it onto a cereal-based mix.
• Keep to the 0.5kg per 100kg bodyweight meal limit and split the day's ration.
• The garlic inclusion is small, but worth knowing about if your horse is already on a separate garlic supplement.
