Baileys Bruised Best British Oats - 20kg for Optimal Horse Health
Baileys Bruised Best British Oats – 20kg
These are UK-grown oats, cleaned, clipped and lightly bruised rather than crushed or rolled. Bruising cracks the husk enough for the horse to get at the kernel while leaving the grain largely intact, so the oats hold their nutrient value longer in the bin and throw far less dust than a crushed oat does.
Oats are the traditional quick-release energy source and that is exactly what this is — a straight, not a compound feed. There are no added vitamins or minerals in the bag, so oats go on top of a balanced diet rather than in place of one. Supplied in 20kg.
Performance & Benefits
- Single-ingredient British oats, thoroughly cleaned and clipped before bruising.
- Bruised rather than crushed, so less nutrient loss in storage and much less dust in the feed room.
- 12–15 MJ/kg digestible energy, quick-release, for a horse that needs more sparkle.
- 11–13% protein and 10–12% fibre — more fibre than most straight cereals carry.
- Easy to add to an existing ration in small, weighed amounts.
Suitable For
- Horses in moderate to hard work needing quick-release carbohydrate energy.
- Horses that have gone flat on a fibre-and-oil ration and need lifting.
- Yards that prefer to feed straights and balance the diet separately.
- Not a balanced feed. Baileys recommend pairing oats with their Oat Balancer Mix, Performance Balancer, Lo-Cal Balancer or Stud Balancer.
- Wrong for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or ulcer-prone horse — Baileys No.24 Ease & Excel Cubes and No.26 Senior Soft & Lite are the low-starch feeds we stock for those.
Feeding
- Feed by weight, alongside forage and a balancer or broad-spectrum supplement.
- Baileys cap any cereal meal at 0.5kg per 100kg bodyweight — 2.5kg for a 500kg horse.
- Total meal size should stay within 1.5–2kg for a horse or 1.25–1.5kg for a pony, chaff and beet pulp included.
- Split the daily amount across at least two meals.
- Build up over two to three weeks. Oats change behaviour a good deal faster than they change condition.
- Baileys publish no per-workload oat rate on their website and ask that you ring their nutrition line for one.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: bruised oats, and nothing else. Supplied in a 20kg bag.
- Digestible energy 12–15 MJ/kg. Protein 11–13%. Oil 3–5%. Fibre 10–12%. Ash 1–3%.
- Baileys publish no starch or sugar figure for these oats, so none is stated here.
- The figures are given as ranges because oats vary by crop and by season.
- Baileys state no BETA or FEI approval for this straight.
Care & Caution
- A straight cereal with no added vitamins or minerals. Fed on its own it will leave the diet short.
- High in quick-release starch. Not suitable for horses with laminitis, insulin resistance, PPID or a history of tying-up.
- Cereal starch that reaches the hindgut acidifies it, so keep meals small and stay inside Baileys' 0.5kg per 100kg bodyweight limit.
- Increase slowly. A sudden jump in oats is the classic cause of a fizzy, unmanageable horse.
