The chicken Wild Bites are the leanest and the highest in protein of the three: 39% crude protein against 18% crude fat, built on 75.4% fresh chicken with a further 16.5% dried chicken. Almost 92% of the treat is chicken, and the only other things in it are glycerin, vinegar and minerals.

That combination — high protein, moderate fat, a soft texture that tears easily — makes these the most practical of the three for long training sessions, where a dog may take twenty or thirty pieces in an hour. Canagan set the allowance by bodyweight, from 3g a day for a 2.5kg dog up to 36g for a 60kg one.

Feeding

• Canagan's daily guide: a 2.5kg dog 3g, a 15kg dog 12g, a 30kg dog 21g and a 60kg dog 36g.
• Complementary food, fed alongside a complete and balanced diet, and counted into the day's ration rather than added to it.
• Break the sausages into smaller pieces for training so the allowance goes further.
• Reseal the bag after opening and keep fresh drinking water available.
