Small dogs get dental disease far more often than big ones, and a kibble sized for a labrador is swallowed whole by a terrier, which removes any abrasive benefit. This is the same Dental recipe Canagan make for larger dogs — free-run turkey 33%, ProDen PlaqueOff 2,500 mg/kg — pressed into a smaller piece the dog has to chew.

Canagan make it in 2kg and 6kg only. The 2kg bag is the sensible size for one small dog: at their small-breed rate of 80g a day for a 5kg dog it lasts about twenty-five days, which keeps the food fresh through the bag.

• A medium or large dog wants the standard Canagan Dental kibble instead; the small pieces do nothing for a bigger mouth.

Feeding

• Canagan's small-breed adult guide, maintenance and active: 3kg 50g/65g, 5kg 80g/100g, 7kg 100g/120g, 10kg 120g/150g.
• Small-breed puppies: 65–90g a day at an expected adult weight of 1–5kg, 145–180g at 5–10kg, 215–255g at 10–25kg.
• Change over across a week: a quarter Canagan on day one, half by day three, three quarters by day five, all of it by day seven.
• Cut the ration by 10% if the dog carries too much weight and raise it by 10% if it carries too little.
• Feed dry; soaking the kibble defeats the mechanical part of the dental effect.

• ProDen PlaqueOff is included at 2,500 mg/kg. It is a seaweed-derived supplement, which is why the thyroid caution below applies.

Care & Caution

• Canagan state that Dental is not recommended for a dog that is pregnant, lactating, or undergoing thyroid treatment.
• The caution follows from ProDen PlaqueOff, which is seaweed-derived and therefore a source of iodine. Ask your vet before feeding it to a dog on thyroid medication.
• It is a food, not a treatment. A dog with established periodontal disease needs a dental examination first; kibble will not shift what is already there.
