Fun indoor games to keep your dog happy this winter!
With shorter daylight hours, outdoor activities and walks become limited, meaning more time spent indoors. Rain, sleet, and wind make staying cozy inside more appealing—for dogs and humans alike. Freezing temperatures can be uncomfortable for many dogs, especially short-haired breeds or smaller pups, who struggle to stay warm. Snow and ice can also be harsh on their paws, causing discomfort or even injuries like cracked pads, and some dogs simply dislike the feel of cold, slippery surfaces underfoot.
Since your dog will be spending more time indoors, here are some fun games to keep them mentally and physically stimulated!
‘Which hand?” game
- Hold a treat in one hand and let your dog guess which hand it’s in. When they choose the right one, give them the treat as a reward. It’s simple, fun, and perfect for sharpening their sniffing skills!
Treat puzzle toys
- Try interactive puzzle toys or create your own using items like muffin tins and tennis balls. Fill them with treats and let your dog work out how to get them. It’s perfect for problem-solving and helps slow down fast eaters!
Indoor fetch
- Choose a lightweight or soft ball to protect your furniture and walls. Toss it down a hallway or in a spacious room, keeping the game controlled to avoid slips or accidents
Tug of war
- Grab a sturdy rope toy for an exciting game of tug-of-war! Let your dog "win" now and then to keep them motivated. It’s a fantastic way to burn energy and strengthen your bond
Hide and seek
- If you have the space, hide somewhere in your home and call your dog to come find you. When they discover your hiding spot, reward them with treats or lots of praise!
Nose work games
- Hide treats or toys around the house and encourage your dog to sniff them out. Start with easy spots to help them catch on, then gradually make it more challenging. This taps into their natural instincts and keeps their mind engaged
Learn a new trick
- Take advantage of indoor time to teach your dog a new trick, like "spin," "roll over," or "high five." Keep sessions short and rewarding with treats or toys. It’s a fun and engaging way to give your pup a mental workout!
