5 top tips to help care for your horse in winter

1. Keep your hands dry and warm
Wet gloves can ruin a yard visit. Keep a pair of oversized washing up gloves at the yard and pull them on over your riding gloves. You can groom hose legs fill buckets and even break ice without soaking your cosy gloves underneath.

2. Make ice easier to manage
Frozen troughs are no fun. A colander or large sieve is perfect for quickly scooping out floating ice without freezing your fingers. Insulating buckets also helps slow down freezing overnight and saves time on busy mornings.

3. Never skip daily hoof checks
Winter mud can hide all sorts of problems. Give hooves a quick scrub so you can clearly see the sole and frog. Using a hoof disinfectant through winter can help prevent issues and keep feet healthier long term.

4. Protect legs from mud
Barrier creams and powders create a non stick layer that helps stop mud clinging to feathers and skin. This keeps legs cleaner and reduces the risk of soreness and irritation.

5. Prepare ahead and dress for the weather
Pre making haynets and feeds once a week saves loads of time. Invest in proper waterproof clothing too because staying warm and dry makes winter horse care far more bearable.
